Teaching

To undergraduates at Magdalen College I teach: Shakespeare; 1509-1642; 1642-1740; and individual authors and topics from 1509 onwards. To English and Classics students I teach Shakespeare; 1509-1600; 1600-1662; Tragedy; Satire; Pastoral. I lecture on Shakespeare and his contemporaries in the English Faculty and teach graduate courses to Masters of Studies students.

With Emma Smith from Hertford College I host a Renaissance play-reading evening with dinner once a term for all the Faculty’s Renaissance graduate students and afficionados (about twenty-five people). We also invite visiting speakers–recent speakers include Simon Shepherd and Andy Lavender from Central School of Speech and Drama (London) and Patricia Parker from Stanford University. With Emma Smith and Sos Eltis from Brasenose College I co-host the seminar series “Drama in Performance”.

I have supervised research students and projects on diverse topics–for example, Catholic Semiotics; Shakespearean Ontology; Feminism and Ovidianism in the Epyllion; Renaissance Science.
